Classic affogato gets a makeover with cold brew iced coffee, coffee ice cream, and crushed chocolate covered espresso beans!
Alex is an amazing father and husband in just about every respect. I wouldn’t ask for him to change in any way…except for one teeny, tiny thing. He is terrible at sharing dessert! Whenever we go out to dinner and split something sweet, I feel like I have to fight to get my fair share. While I would prefer to savor the dessert slowly and (gasp!) maybe even put my spoon down between bites, Alex wolfs it down at lightning speed.
This is especially true when we order one of his favorite desserts: affogato. If you’ve never heard of it, affogato is a traditional Italian dessert made by pouring hot espresso over vanilla gelato. It’s delicious, but it melts so quickly! I feel like I am racing against the steaming coffee and against Alex, and the entire experience is just way more nerve wracking then anything involving ice cream should ever be.
So today, in honor of Father’s Day this Sunday, I’m sharing a new and improved recipe for affogato made with cold brew iced coffee. Picture it: all the roasted, caramely flavors of cold brew, plus scoops of vanilla and coffee ice cream. And just for good measure, I also sprinkled on tons of crushed chocolate covered espresso beans.
Because a little chocolate never hurt anything, right?
The recipe is super simple, but it does require a bit of advanced planning. You need to make the cold brew at least one day in ahead. Just combine coarsely ground coffee beans and cold water in a jar. Let stand for at least 12 hours, then strain and chill. This recipe makes just enough for four servings of affogato, but feel free to double it–it is iced coffee season, after all.
You can use any ice cream flavors you like. Vanilla and coffee are the classic choices, but I think chocolate would be amazing (almost like a mocha!). You could also try almond, coconut, or cookies and cream.
Once you pour the coffee over the ice cream it does melt a bit, but much more slowly than if you used hot coffee (stating the obvious here), and the end result is more like an extra thick cold brew milkshake. YUM.
Wondering what Alex thought of the dessert he inspired? I think it pretty much sums it up to tell you that he couldn’t resist a big bowl after we’d gotten home from his mom’s birthday celebration where we’d already had plenty of dessert.
Happy Father’s Day!
